About Us
Dr Joseph McGonagle is a Lecturer in Cultural Studies in the French-speaking World at The University of Manchester, UK.
His expertise lies in representations of ethnicity in French and Francophone visual culture and he has published several journal articles analysing the depiction of a range of ethnicities in contemporary French film, photography and television. He has a particular interest in the representation of French-Maghrebi identities in French film, and the work of the Franco-Algerian artist Zineb Sedira. He is also currently writing a monograph under contract with Manchester University Press on representations of ethnicity in contemporary French visual culture (publication scheduled for 2010).
Dr Edward Welch is a Senior Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Durham, UK.
His expertise lies within the field of cultural production and the mass media in 1950s and 60s France. His recently-published monograph on François Mauriac focuses on Mauriac’s post-war career as a journalist, and includes an extensive analysis of the important role played by L’Express in the journalistic field at the time. Among his current research interests is French photojournalism in the post-war period, and the role played by photojournalism in the articulation and mediation of history.
