North To North: Launch Event, Friday 4 June

Join us on Friday 4 June at Cornerhouse, Manchester, as we mark the beginning of John Perivolaris's journey south to Algeria via London, Dover and France. John will talk about the aims of the North To North project, and about the ways in which you can get involved. The event will start at 5pm and will last an hour, after which we will drink to John's trip, and send him on his way. If you can't make it to Manchester this Friday, don't forget that you can follow John's progress and contribute to his journey via the North To North blog.

North To North: A Journey in Postcards from Manchester to the Maghreb

As part of our exhibition at the Cornerhouse in April-May 2011, we have commissioned John Perivolaris to undertake a journey between Manchester and Algeria later this year. Lasting one month between 5 June and 5 July, the journey will take Perivolaris from the UK, through France to Algeria, and will result in an installation in the exhibition entitled North To North. Structured around a series of encounters with people connected personally to both France and Algeria, and via visits to key sites of memory that underpin the display of the Franco-Algerian relationship in the public sphere today, North to North will comprise walks and interviews with participants. The project will also endeavour to triangulate the Franco-Algerian relationship by exploring the signs and traces of the less obvious, but no less complex, ties between the UK and a country that France has historically assumed to be its own ‘back yard’. In doing so, it will raise questions about the contemporary relationship between notions of the “North” and “South” in an increasingly globalised world. During his journey, John wil be posting images and updates on the North To North blog. He welcomes contributions and suggestions for places to visit on his journey. Visit the blog to find out more and get in touch.
